3D Printing For Your Next Camping Adventure

The Basics of Camping

You are reading this blog for a few reasons. The first is that you are a 3D printing nerd like me. The second is that you probably are a road warrior that occasionally likes to hit the dirt for a hike, backpacking, or overnight camping adventure. Well, you are in the right place! I created this simple go-to resource for 3D printing your next camping adventure.

Out of all the outdoor activities, I happen to love hiking. I grew up doing it with my dad so when I started Robo, I realized that amongst the many creations I would make over the years, I could also simultaneously create useful things that I can take on a hiking trip. That's when things got interesting. I scoured the internet and was able to find a few items that really would come in handy on my next trip. Let's take a look at what these items are and show them in action. Check out the video I made below, as well as the images/links to the actual files so that you, too, can take advantage of 3D printing for your next outdoor extravaganza.

Check out some of the items below

GoPro Mount

I love traveling and taking photos/videos with my GoPro so first and foremost, I needed a mount to strap to my hiking bag. I looked on Thingiverse and discovered a gem of a piece designed by 3D modeler, kacymartin. This 3D model is just the right simplicity and ingenuity I was look for. Just attach your GoPro Hero 5 and you're ready to point-of-view capture your next adventure!

Headlamp Hat

When I received a portable husky flashlight for Christmas last year, I thought it would be cool to create a hat mount to use during night hikes. If you have a different size flashlight, go ahead and just scale the file to the appropriate size in order to make it fit. Works like a charm!

Energy Drink Capsule / Portable Lamp

Who doesn't like to throw back an energy drink when you are out on the open trails? Whether you do or not, you can use these cans in some nifty ways. You can make a portable canister for holding necessities that can also dual purpose by serving as a night lamp utilizing the flashlight above ^. I thought this was not only a great use of space, but also convenient to have when out in the wilderness. And it also easily hooks onto a backpack — genius.

Pocket Tackle Box

Do you do any fishing while out on your camping adventures? Then this 3D printed pocket tackle box is perfect for you. It has interchangeable slots so you can adjust the amount of organizational spaces as well as the size of each space. I configured it perfectly to fit some lures, hooks, and line locks.

This print can also easily be used to store other small items or serve as a first aid kit, which may come in handy every once in a while.

Stove Stand

Disclaimer: I am not an affiliate of Jetboil, but have you ever used their camping cooking system? If not, it's worth the investment if you do long hikes and overnight adventures. If you have a Jetboil, it's always a good idea to have a stand for it to keep it level as well as above the ground for safety reasons.

Catapult Game

Let's face the facts. Sometimes you get a little bored outdoors. This catapult game, which will attach to the same energy drink can used in the cannister above, can easily burn an hour of fun. All you do is attach it to the top of the can, load a coin into it, press back, and launch it. Set up a target or a cup and see who can sink it. Game on!

Camelback Hose Mount

If you hike a lot, you will feel my pain here. One of the most frustrating things is that my drinking hose either gets in the way or is not easily accessible. This little backpack strap mount holds that hose in place...all the time! Whew. It's the little things that make your outdoor experience that much better.

Hope you all enjoyed this blog and video. I am challenging myself more and more each day to use 3D printing and apply it to my everday life. Stay tuned for more videos and blogs like this in the future. Until then, happy printing!
