Safey and Compliance

Intended use

Robo 3D printers are designed for fused filament fabrication (FFF) for various thermoplastic materials such as PLA, ABS, PETG, CPE, etc. Robo 3D printers are built for speed and precision, making them ideal for conceptual models, functional prototypes, or small part production for personal, educational and/or business applications. It is the the responsibility of the user to evaluate the printed part designs and resulting printed objects for their intended end use. The machine settings have been calibrated per the material properties of Robo certified filaments, however other correctly sized filament brands are compatible with Robo printers as well. The product and materials should be treated with care in order to ensure a safe environment and a well-performing, long lasting machine.

Work area

Always use Robo R2 in a clean and well lit area. Robo R2 should be placed on a flat, non-flammable surface with adequate ventilation and clearance around the printer. Avoid use in a wet or damp area, or in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry when operating the machine. Keep hair, clothing and gloves away from the moving parts to avoid entanglement. Only operate the Robo R2 in ambient temperatures between 0°C and 40°C. It is advised that the machine is stored out of reach of children or untrained persons.

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial or residential environment. This equipment can radiate unintentional radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area may cause interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at their own expense.

Changes and modifications not expressly approved by the manufacturer of this equipment can void your authority to operate this equipment under FCC rules.

Electrical safety

The Robo R2 operates on 24 volts (extra low voltage) and is therefore outside the scope of the low-voltage directive. The power supply meets all CE mark regulations and is protected against short-circuit, overload, over voltage and overheating. For more information concerning electrical safety aspects please refer to the MeanWell EC-Conformity Declaration for the GS220AX power adapters. Only use the power supply and electrical cables provided by Robo with the Robo R2. Always use with a properly grounded outlet. Do not modify the Robo R2 power cord. Keep the power supply away from liquids, excess heat, and sharp or moving parts.

Always power off and unplug the printer before doing maintenance or modifications.

Mechanical safety

The Robo R2 contains many moving parts. However, the axis motors are not powerful enough to cause serious injuries. It is still advised to only reach in the machine when it is idle or powered off.

The accessories box includes sharp tools such as a spatula and pointed tweezers. Please keep hands clear of sharp edges when using these tools, especially for part removal.

Always power off and unplug the printer before doing maintenance or modifications.

Risk of burns

There is a potential risk of burns, since the extruder can be heated to temperatures of up to 290°C and the print bed heated to up to 100°C. The extruder nozzle can be mostly covered by a magnetically detachable cover plate to prevent contact, but it is still advised to not reach in the machine when the extruder nozzle and/or print bed are hot or the machine is operating. Potentially hot surfaces are marked with a hot surface symbol.

Always allow the printer to cool down for at least 30 minutes before performing maintenance or modifications.

Materials safety

The Robo R2 is designed to print primarily with PLA and ABS filaments. The use of other materials is at your own risk. It is advised to only use your printer in well-ventilated areas.

Printing with standard PLA is considered safe, although good ventilation is still advised for possible unknown vapors released from color dyes.

While printing with ABS, it is possible for small concentrations of Styrene vapor to be released. In some cases this may cause headaches, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling of intoxication. Therefore good ventilation is required, and long term exposure should be avoided. It is advised to use a fume hood (with active carbon filtering for ductless extraction). Fume extraction is required for use in offices, classrooms, etc.

General safety

The Robo R2 is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced mental and/or physical capabilities or inexperienced with 3d printing, unless they have been given supervision or instruction by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be under constant supervision when using the printer. Do not operate Robo R2 under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication.
